Palavi: Environmental awareness creation campaign

Palavi

People like festivals. They rejoice and celebrate these with great enthusiasm. But over the years some wrong practices have got incorporated in the festivities. They have a detrimental impact on the environment.

  • Our organization makes special efforts to highlight these harmful practices and curb them and induce people to celebrate festivals in an environmental friendly manner.
  • We try to change the attitudes of people in general and school children in particular, and utilize festivals to in grain in them the love for environment.
  • To educate the people about ill effects of Ganapati idol immersion on the lake water ecosystems, we initiated this awareness campaign about 5-6 years back.

Ganesh Chaturthi

Traditionally, Ganpati idols were made out of clay. By and large artisans made idols from a lighter and cheaper material (plaster of Paris). Though POP is a boon to the artisans, it is a hazardous material to the environment as it contains chemicals like gypsum, sulfur, phosphorus and magnesium. When we immerse these idols in the sea or lakes, chemicals like mercury, cadmium and arsenic present in the colors are released and harm the living plants and fish. These chemicals enter our system after consumption of such fish.
Paryavaran Dakshata Manch aims to educate people about the hazardous effects of the idols immersion on the ecosystem and bring a positive change in their attitude.

  • We encourage and teach them to make idols from clay and paper pulp through our workshops.
  • We suggest alternatives and motivate them to celebrate this festival in an eco friendly manner.

The articles used for decorations are made of plastic, thermocol and other non biodegradable material. Relying on non-biodegradable materials and ingredients is an unsustainable and polluting practice. It traps resources and energy that cannot be re-claimed, resulting in masses of polluting substances and rubbish that cannot be digested by the planet. This also causes health problems.

  • We suggest alternatives to reduce these ill effects.
  • We conduct workshops on making eco friendly decorations.

Nagpanchmi

nag

Snakes attack prey only when hungry, and will try to bite a human only if they feel seriously threatened. If possible, a frightened snake will almost always try to flee. However, if the snake does not find time to escape it may bite in self defense.

Snakes are predators and therefore use other organisms as a source of food chain. Snakes are secondary consumers. They eat therats . If snakes are killed the number of rats will increase manifold . Hence we need to protect snakes instead of killing them. The festival is celebrated by worshipping the snake.

Paryavaran Dakshata Manch aims to educate people by organizing exhibitions to clear their misconceptions and help them idendify poisonous and non poisonous snakes.

  • We train people for first aid in case of snake bites.
  • We teach to celebrate the festival in an eco friendly manner.

Holi

Holi is a festival of colors. Rangpanchami is the next day when people smear colored powders on each other. Traditionally these colors are made from dyes or chemicals. These chemicals have harmful effect on our health.

Paryavaran Dakshata manch promotes use of natural colors made from flowers, leaves etc. as an alternative and tries to dissuade people-especially students from using harmful chemical colors.

  • Volunteers of the organization conduct workshops to teach how to make natural colors.

Vrukshabandhan

Paryavaran Dakshata manch encourages children to celebrate Raksha bandhan in a novel way by tying Rakhi around their favorite tree.

  • They then take an oath to protect and take care of the tree, thus strengthening their bond with nature. Many schools participate in this activity.

Independence Day

Independence Day is celebrated all over India on 15th of august . We observe that the thousands of plastic flags are disposed in the waste after the celebrations.

    • As a mark of respect to  our national flag and to prevent the harmful impact of plastic on the environment, we organize anti plastic flag campaign.
